PC Hardware Requirements for The Edge® Software

Virtually any new PC you can buy today will be more than adequate for running The Edge. We have been satisfied with HP and Dell.

It is best to find a local technician to do your PC and network setup. You should have a local technician in any case, and it is much better to start that relationship with the system setup than with an emergency.

Is your store wireless – or you want it to be? For a wireless network, the SQL Server version is necessary.

The table below details the hardware requirements for The Edge:

Operating System Compatible with the following versions of Microsoft Windows (32- or 64-bit):

  • Windows 10
  • Windows 8 or 8.1
  • Windows 7 Home SP1*/Professional SP1 (Microsoft is no longer providing mainstream support.  Security updates are available until 2020.)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 and 2012 R2.

*Integrated e-mail support not available on these versions.

If you’re using a tablet workstation, be sure it is running a full version of Windows such as Windows 8.1 rather than Windows RT.

NOTE!

Windows 95/98/ME/2000/RT/Vista/XP/Windows Server 2003 are not supported.

Processor The Edge will run on a Pentium 4 or better processor.
RAM Each workstation should have at least 2GB of RAM. The server should have at least 4GB of RAM.
Disk Please ensure that you have at least 20GB of free disk space before you install The Edge. If you are buying a new PC, we recommend an 80GB hard drive or larger.
Display We require a minimum of 1024×768 pixels or more with 32,767 colors or more. When buying a new PC, dedicated display RAM is better than shared display RAM.
Ports Depending on which optional peripherals you want to use, please ensure that you have enough free ports of the appropriate type:
Barcode Scanner Bar code scanners require a USB port.Note: If you buy your barcode scanner from us, it will come pre-programmed and we also stock a limited number of loaner units in case you need to send yours in for service.
MSR If you plan to use our integrated credit card processing then you will need to get an approved magnetic stripe reader. Please check with us on approved devices. The MSR requires a USB port.
Keyboard The keyboard usually requires a USB port.
Pointing Device A mouse or other pointing device is not strictly required to use The Edge, but we strongly recommend one.Pointing devices will require a USB port.If you don’t have the desktop space for a traditional mouse, consider a trackball or touch pad.
Tag Printer Requires a USB or LPT port. Note: Tag printers should NOT be networked.Note: If you buy your tag printer from us, it will come pre-programmed and we also stock a limited number of loaner units in case you need to send yours in for service.
Page printer. For receipts, reports, and general printing requirements, USB ports are most common. Page printers are commonly shared on a network.We do not sell page printers, but there are numerous suitable laser printers in the marketplace. The most important considerations for you should be:

  • The placement of the printer in your cabinetry with respect to accessibility of the paper input and output trays.
  • Whether you want to print receipts and reports in black only, or in color.
  • The time to print the first page from a cold start is especially important.

Not all page printers are suitable for use with The Edge, or in a retail environment.

  • Printers intended primarily for printing photos are generally not suitable.
  • Printers that are intended for personal use are generally unsuitable. Printers intended for business or “workgroup” use are preferred.
  • Printers with “PostScript” drivers have been found to perform poorly, especially when printing receipts and repair envelopes. Printers with “PCL” drivers are preferred.
USB Hub If you exceed the number of USB ports on your computer, you can get a USB Hub to increase the number of available ports.
Network If you will be using more than one PC in your store, then you must also have a local area network. We recommend that you get an electrician to install “Cat 5e” or better wiring. Get a “1000Mbps Switch” or “Gigabit Switch” and ensure that each of your computers has a 1000-Base-T or Gigabit network interface card (NIC) installed or built in.Note: If you plan to use a wireless network, then you must upgrade to the SQL Server version of The Edge.
Internet An Internet connection is required for most support services. We strongly recommend that you get “broadband” internet service such as DSL, Cable or Fiber in each store. Some support services are not practical without broadband internet.An Internet connection is also required if you want to utilize the MaxiTurn, postcard, SMS and/or email features.If you have two or more stores, and you want them to share data, then broadband Internet is required.
Backup You absolutely must have some reliable daily backup method. Please back up the “edge database” and “shared data folder” daily. This might involve additional hardware, or might involve an online service. Have your local technician set this up for you.We recommend www.Carbonite.com cloud backup service, but there are several reliable services available.
